The formula for “youth” is to continue active

Some people may seem considerably older, when in fact they are younger than they appear. The opposite also happens a lot. The different life experiences of individuals leave marks on the face and body, some more profound. Financial hardships, prolonged illnesses or even too much sun exposure are factors for early aging. Therefore, people may seem to look older or younger than they appear to be.

On the other hand, there are habits that can help you feel younger. Such is the case with physical aerobic exercises that help the body in general, like walking, for example. Walking is a low-impact cardiovascular activity that does not require any special equipment other than a good pair of shoes.

According to the Mayo Clinic, an important medical and academic center in the United States, “something as simple as a daily brisk walk can help you live a healthier life”. The benefits are many. It can help you maintain a healthy weight, prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type II diabetes, strengthen your bones and muscles, as well as improve your balance and coordination. And if you walk outdoors in an uplifting environment, rather than on a treadmill, you will also benefit spiritually.

Cycling is another recommended activity. Even a stationary bike provides physiological benefits. Suggestion: there are DVDs that simulate riding through landscapes of your choosing. There are all sorts of options, from biking through Caribbean rainforest to the lavender fields of Provence, France, that help time go by with more pleasure.

Another suggestion is to not stop once you retire. The advantages reported by those who continue working seem to derive from a feeling of accomplishment and pleasurable interaction that comes from being in a companionable environment.

This environment includes volunteer work as well as paid employment. With regard to volunteer work, a study by Carnegie Mellon University researchers found that older adults who volunteered two hundred hours a year were less likely to develop hypertension than non-volunteers.
